Introduction To Texas Holdem
Texas Hold’em is possibly the most popular form of poker played today, and is fortunately also one of the simplest. This has led to its massive appeal worldwide, and is played everywhere from the smallest of home games to the grandest of casinos.
The game begins with the two players to the left of the dealer posting blinds (or sometimes ante's, depending on the betting structure). These are predetermined amounts and form the initial pot.
The dealer then deals two cards to each player. These are known as "hole" or "pocket" cards. The first round of betting ensues (sometimes called pre-flop) whereby players, starting with the one to the left of the blind poster, can choose to fold, call or raise. A fold puts you out of the current hand and your cards are returned to the dealer, a call requires you to match the current largest bet (initially will be the size of the big blind) and a raise requires you to exceed the current maximum bet. The amounts vary depending on the game, but in no-limit there are, as the name suggests, no limits to the size of the bet. The bets are normally increments of the current pot size.
Next, the dealer lays down three community cards. This is known as the "flop". Another round of betting begins as before, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. The three community cards can be used in conjunction with the two "hole" cards to form a five-card poker hand.
The dealer then deals another community card, known as the "turn". This card can also be used in conjunction with "hole" cards or any other community cards to make your best five-card hand. Another round of betting begins as before, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
Finally, the final community card is dealt, which is known as the "river". A final round of betting begins starting with the player to the left of the dealer. Next is the "showdown", where any remaining players show their cards, starting with the player to the left of the last player to call. If a player before you have shown a better hand, you can choose not to show your cards and pass them back to the dealer face down.
The player with the best five-card hand, using any combination of "hole" and "community" cards wins. There are scenarios where players have the same hand, or the five community cards represent the best hand. This leads to a split pot.
If there is only one player remaining in the game at any stage due to others folding, the remaining player is given the pot. This can occur as early as pre-flop if the "hole" cards are not in favour of the players.
